NSF announced the 2020 continuation of its Program on Fairness in Artificial Intelligence in Collaboration with Amazon (FAI) on April 16 through solicitation NSF 20-566. Proposals are due on July 13, 2020 by 5 p.m. submitter’s local time. (Letters of intent are not required this year.)
The program will support computational research focused on fairness in AI, with the goal of contributing to trustworthy AI systems that are readily accepted and deployed to tackle grand challenges facing society. Consistent with these goals, the lead PI on each proposal must bring computer science expertise to the research. A PI need not have her or his primary affiliation with a Computer Science department, but their research record should be focused on computational science.
All application areas are encouraged, including but not limited to, speech, language, computer vision, logistics, educational technologies, decision support and decision making. Projects must clearly be driven by fairness considerations and show computational innovation. NSF and Amazon encourage proposals (either independently or in multi-institution collaborations) from investigators at institutions that serve groups historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines. Although Amazon provides partial funding for this program, it will not play a role in the selection of proposals for awards.
See program solicitation NSF 20-566 for further details on potential project topics, technical contributions, and proposal requirements for this program.
