I’ll talk about two projects, SiMSAM and DataSketch, that are designed to center and build from students’ own representations of scientific phenomena. Rich classroom and student group data suggests a number of ways that affect and engagement manifest within the projects.

Exploring the impact of interventions on student affect

We investigated the impact of interventions on student’s negative emotions, e.g., boredom. Results showed that interventions reduced negative emotions modulated by gender and how the intervention was promoted.
